Our travels this day took us down Highway 89A to the Navajo Bridge. At this location there are two bridges similar in appearance spanning the Colorado River. These two bridges, one historic and one new, represent one of only seven land crossings of the Colorado River for 750 miles. This is also a prime spot for viewing some California Condors that call the area home. On our visit there we did see two of these magnificent birds. They were perched high above the Colorado River on the newer of the bridges.
Our overnight stay was at The View Hotel which is the only hotel located within the boundaries of Monument Valley Navajo Tribal Park. The hotel is designed to blend in with the surrounding terrain. Our room was on the third floor with an almost unobstructed view of the sky. We also had a spectacular view of "Mittens" and other rock formations on the valley floor. Dinner at the hotel was also quite good. I decided to go with the "Navajo Sampler". This dish had small portions of several Navajo dishes, including mutton stew, a red chili pork stew, Navajo tacos - on blue corn fry bread, blue corn mash, and a green chili stew.
We had planned on being able to experiment with some astrophotography using our telescope and digital camera. Unfortunately, Mother Earth had other plans. The skies gradually clouded over for the night and all we were able to get were a few shots of the full moon. Maybe next time. The sunset and sunrise were spectacular, though!
