Sunday finds us departing St. George, UT and heading towards Zion N.P. We detoured slightly and decided to take a drive through Dixie N.F. from Pine Valley to Pinto, UT. We were in for a treat! The forest service road we chose to drive climbed up into the forest a wound its way high above the valley. The road offered us some very nice views of coral colored cliffs which rose high above the forest floor. The first half was rather easy going. The second half included some rougher sections of road, including a section of washed out culvert.
We finally made it to Springdale, UT just outside Zion NP by mid-afternoon. We parked in town and took the shuttle into the park. The main road which goes into the canyon is closed off to vehicle traffic from April to October. The park shuttle is the best way to get to all points of the canyon. After our visit there, it was onward to Kanab, UT.
